Recycling (Leading by Example)

I took the girls to McDonalds last week.  And while we were eating our meal I noticed just how much packaging was put into a few happy meals, and how much of it was actually recyclable.  Much of the packaging is paper or cardboard (although there is still lots that is not recyclable).  I started breaking down and grouping together our paper recycling from the "garbage", only to realize that there is no paper recycling containers at McDonalds.

Daughter: "Well, I guess we will just have to throw it in the garbage."

While I may have done that in the past, I decided that wasn't the going to be the case today.  I packaged it all up, and took it home for our personal recycling.  This was a great opportunity to show the girls that they have some control over how they engage with or react to situations presented by others.  Just because there was no recycling bin, doesn't mean that everything had to go into the garbage.  We have the agency to make a difference.  So they went and played in the playroom, and when we got home I made a point of highlighting that they do have control, and there are lots of ways to help the environment out.

Newfoundland and Labrador is far behind other jurisdictions when it comes to recycling rules and practices although we are slowly catching up with many businesses having voluntary recycling options.
